New contemporary collection display

The Caen Museum of Fine Arts acquired its first contemporary work in 1974 - a painting by Pierre Soulages. Since then, he has built up a unique collection, favoring an anhistorical aim and ruling out any school considerations.

This demand for openness has never wavered, especially in the field of prints where ambitious acquisitions have followed major exhibitions (Baselitz, Dine, Plensa, Sicilia, etc.). In 2015, a partnership with the Frac Normandie Caen, doubled the following year by the new cycle of artist residencies entitled “Résonance”, made it possible to re-examine the place of the contemporary in the museum, then to stimulate a dynamic of enrichment, through donations, deposits and purchases.

In 2021, the museum is offering a new display in its spaces devoted to the 20th and 21st centuries, in tribute to the donors who in recent years have contributed to the enrichment of contemporary collections, in particular in the field of graphic arts.
